Indian Railways Acts to Ease Travel Woes Amid Indigo Crisis, Adds 116 Extra Coaches Across 37 Trains and Announces 4 Special Services

In a major relief for passengers troubled by widespread flight cancellations—especially those caused by the ongoing Indigo crisis—Indian Railways has stepped up with a significant nationwide measure. To accommodate the sudden surge in travel demand, the Railways has added 116 additional coaches across 37 major trains, effective 6 December 2025. Alongside this, the Railways has also introduced four special trains to ensure smooth travel during this high-demand period.

Southern Railway Leads With Maximum Coach Additions

Among all zones, Southern Railway (SR) has taken the lead by augmenting 18 trains with extra chair car and sleeper class coaches. This enhancement, implemented from 6 December 2025, will offer thousands of additional seats for passengers travelling in the southern region.

Northern and Western Railways Strengthen Capacity

Following closely, Northern Railway (NR) has added extra 3AC and chair car coaches in 8 key trains, effective immediately. This move will help manage the heavy footfall on North India’s busiest routes.

Western Railway (WR) has strengthened four high-traffic trains by adding 2AC and 3AC coaches, also effective from 6 December 2025. These enhancements will benefit passengers travelling between major western cities and Delhi.

Additional Trips and Increased Connectivity Across India

Multiple railway zones have introduced extra trips and added premium coaches to handle regional demands:

  • East Central Railway (ECR): Added 2AC coaches to Rajendra Nagar–New Delhi (12309) for five trips from 6–10 December.
  • East Coast Railway (ECOR): Added 2AC coaches to Bhubaneswar–New Delhi services for five trips.
  • Eastern Railway (ER): Added sleeper coaches to three major trains for six trips on 7 and 8 December.
  • Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR): Enhanced two important trains with 3AC and sleeper coaches for every trip between 6–13 December.

Four Special Trains Announced

To further ease travel pressure, Indian Railways has scheduled four special trains, including:

  1. Gorakhpur – Anand Vihar Terminal – Gorakhpur Special (05591/05592)
To run four trips from 7–9 December.
  2. New Delhi – Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan – New Delhi Vande Bharat Special (02439/02440)
To run on 6 December, offering a premium travel option for Jammu-bound passengers.
  3. New Delhi – Mumbai Central – New Delhi Superfast Special (04002/04001)
To run on 6 and 7 December, catering to heavy west-bound demand.
  4. Hazrat Nizamuddin – Thiruvananthapuram Central Superfast Special (04080)
    A one-way service departing on 6 December.

Railways Ensures Smooth Travel Amid Nationwide Air Travel Disruptions

These measures not only reflect the Railways’ preparedness but also its commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and timely travel options during periods of crisis. With expanded capacity, special services, and increased frequencies, Indian Railways has reassured commuters of uninterrupted travel connectivity across the country.
