Rajkot, Gujarat: In a unique anti-corruption initiative, Suryakant Singh, an officer in the Housing Department of Rajkot Municipal Corporation, has put up bold posters in his office urging citizens not to offer bribes. The message comes after last year’s Rajkot Gamezone fire tragedy, which claimed 28 lives, including 12 children, and exposed administrative negligence.
The Message on the Posters
The posters in Singh’s chamber carry a simple yet firm appeal: “I receive a good salary for my work. Please do not embarrass me by offering a bribe. If I perform my duty correctly, I owe you nothing extra. I will not accept money for any improper work. I am your friend and a responsible citizen.”
The posters also feature lines from Guvalvant Shah, a prominent 88-year-old writer, thinker, and social activist from Gujarat, reinforcing the message of integrity and public service.
Who is Suryakant Singh?
Suryakant Singh, a former BSF officer, now serves in the Housing Department of Rajkot Municipal Corporation, one of Gujarat’s four major municipal bodies. His bold anti-bribery initiative has drawn attention in local media, though Singh himself has not appeared publicly for statements. Staff confirmed that the posters were installed under his direction.
Context and Significance
The Rajkot Municipal Corporation faced widespread criticism after the Gamezone fire for lapses in administration and corruption, which contributed to the tragedy. Singh’s campaign is being hailed as a refreshing stand against corruption, emphasizing accountability, transparency, and ethical governance.
